Day Nine: Writing and Not Writing

When I’m not writing:

When I’m not writing, I’m working as a Customer Assistant at my local Supermarket.

When I’m not writing, I’m reading and enjoying books and looking for material to review.

When I’m not writing, I’m watching book-tuber videos on YouTube or researching additional material on fandoms which I am apart of.

When I’m not writing, I’m listening to music and enjoying time with my family.

When I’m not writing, I’m thinking of what to write next and creating my monthly blog plans.

Day Eight: Reinvent the Letter Format

Dear Great Granny Mary,

This here is a… not so private letter to you, despite how it’s one you’ll never read I still feel that it is one which needs to be written. I may not have known you, and you may not have known me or the respect which I hold for you (having heard about you from the stories told by others) but those storytellers know and now whoever else that reads this will to.

There are so many things that I wish I could say to you. Really, I just wish I’d been able to meet you, to hear your stories and just be in your presence. I wish I could thank you for giving me the most favourite members of my family and for giving me my Nan – who I literally could not live without.

I suppose this short letter is just that… a thank you. Sadly it’s a thank you that you’ll never get, not really. A thank you letter for giving me a Nan who means the world to me and for showing me that it’s possible to love, respect and admire someone that I’ve never actually met – that person being you, obviously. 🙂

With love,

Stacey.

Day Seven: Let Social Media Inspire You

tweet

We are our biggest critics. This is something I have learned throughout the years whether it’s when writing an essay for class or a piece for my blog or just one of the little stories I make up in my head whilst bored… The difficulty of writing is something which is overlooked by many because many take it for granted. As a reader, you are presented with the final piece and whether you critique it or not that piece is never going to change. However, that is merely the process with completed works undergo… Before the piece is complete it embarks on a much more perilous journey.

As writers, we are faced with a series of difficult challenges which force us to expand our knowledge, imagination and all other boundaries which come with the act of writing. We must create something which is unique and our own, making sure not to plagiarise the works of others, whilst also making sure that our work remains something which will still appeal to the masses and/or our target audience.

And so the self-criticism begins and draft after draft of the same piece of work is created. Paper is crumpled and binned, text on screen is deleted and re-typed… The cycle is an endlessly tiresome one which leaves many wondering why they were even thinking about writing in the first place, wondering if it is worth all the stress and anxiety being put upon them as they sit there staring – yet again – at a blank sheet of paper or screen…

Yes. Yes it is. Let me tell you my own personal opinion. Many would say that perfection takes time and therefore the writings which take longer to write are better, more perfected than those written in the space of five minutes. I don’t agree. Perfection, in my opinion, does not exist…

So, readers and writers, if you find yourself in the position of thinking such a thing as mentioned on this tweet, know this… Whatever you write will be enjoyed by at least someone out there in the world and if at least one person enjoys reading it and you enjoyed writing it then it is worth it all.

And you’d be surprised at how many people want to listen.

Day Six: The Space to Write

  • What are your writing habits?
I have a tendency to always be writing, or at least thinking about writing during the times when I can’t write. This has always been a habit of mine and that habit has only increased in frequency with this blog in production!
  • What equipment or supplies do you use to write?
A notepad, or at least a LOT of paper, some pens and whatever else I need, this normally includes a book that I am reviewing. I also type up final drafts on my laptop or phone before posting.
  • What do you need and want in a physical space?
I like a lot of space to write but somewhere I can be left in peace. As long as I have enough room to have all my notes and essentials sitting in front of me then I’m alright!

Additional Question: What would you, as the readers of my blog, like to see posted? Let me know in the comments below!

Day Five: Hook ’Em with a Quote

quote.PNG

“Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?”

This quote taken from the novel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K Rowling and spoken by Michael Gambon in his portrayal of Albus Dumbledore in the movie adaptation will forever be one of my most favourite quotes.

true story Isn’t it though? In an article which I wrote for The Nerd Daily ‘The Reality of Fiction‘, I spoke about how important fiction is to each and every one of us. The Reality of Fiction looks also at how the stories we read and watch on screen influence our reality and our lives. The do this because despite how many of them are filled with fantastical elements that do not exist in this world we live in… they’re real. To us, the stories we enjoy are real and therefore, as Dumbledore states is true.

not true.gif I know there are some of you reading this right now and reacting exactly like this to what I have written. That’s fine, you’re entitled to your opinion, you have your own beliefs and your own reality which is, most likely, this one.

My reality, however, will forever remain a mix of the world which I live in and those which I wish I could. What can I say, I’m a strong believer of fantasy being the best type of reality.

Day Four: A Story In A Single Image

pic.jpg

If You Go Down To The Woods Today. . .

The image which I have selected to write about is that one which is on the top left corner. When I first looked at all four images the one showing the girl standing alone in what seems to be a clearing or enterance to a forest immediately spoke to me. Many feelings arose when I saw this image: feelings of curiosity and wonder, uncertainty and a hint of fear… I put myself in the shoes of the girl within the picture and I question whether to look upon the woods ahead as a place of solitude or a dangerous terrain which acts as the home to many mysterious and potentially dangerous creatures.

Within fictional stories we have been told since a young age that whilst the woods may be a place of wonder and magic, danger lurks within the trees and waits for the moment to strike.

If you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise – indeed!

Day Three: One-Word Inspiration

ABUNDANCE

Defined, abundance means ‘a very large quantity of something’. I’ve been putting a lot of thought into the term abundance and of how it can be both a good and a bad thing. The example I’m picking for today is: an abundance of money. Does money really bring one happiness? This is a question which I have always debated with myself.

On one hand a large amount of money being obtained to one individual could provide them with happiness by use of allowing them to buy things which make them happy – now if I was to have a large amount of money I know for a fact that the majority of that money would be spent on books which would bring me money.

On the other hand, those who have money in large amounts are often portrayed as being unhappy underneath the ‘act’ which they put on for others. This is understandable as money isn’t everything and happiness can be achieved in many ways, such as those who are less well off but have the support and unconditional love of their families – just look at the fictional family of the Weasleys within the Harry Potter series by J.K Rowling for example!

What do YOU think of the term ‘abundance’? Let me know in the comments and feel free to relate the term to other things, not just money.

Day Two: Write a List

Five Things I’ve Learned In Life

  1. You can’t make everyone happy.
  2. Grades should never come before health (mental or physical).
  3. University was not as fun as I had believed it would be prior attending.
  4. The imagination should not be suppressed.
  5. Online friends are just as valuable as the ones seen everyday.

And so, there it is, five examples of the many things which I have learned thus far in my 22 years of life!

What are some of the facts and valuable lessons which you have learned? Let me know in the comments below.

Day One: I Write Because…

Related image

Why do I write?

Why do write?

I don’t think I write for any reason different as to why others may write. I write because I love to, I write because I need to, I write because I want to.

Writing to me is as easy as breathing and in my own personal opinion – although perhaps this applies to some of you as well – writing is often easier than speaking. Whether it’s explaining something or merely wanting to let someone know of my opinion, writing it down or typing it up as I am doing now is often MUCH eaiser than having to explain it in words…

Writing comes from somewhere deep inside, a reason why I love both writing myself and reading what others have written. Words are magic and reading what others have written, for the most part, is like being allowed to see into their souls for just a brief moment because that is where writing comes from in my opinion. Writing comes from the head, heart and soul all at once and is something which I think is an act and gift that is more often than not overlooked…
